Working in a luxury retail environment surrounded by diamonds, it’s only natural that occasionally something sparkly will catch our eye. Denise, based at Phillip Stoner’s Victoria Quarter store, fell victim to this as she became enchanted with a loose, princess cut diamond…
“I have over 20 years experience in the jewellery trade, more than 10 of these at Phillip Stoner. I have a real passion for providing a special experience for customers and I particularly enjoy assisting them when they want to create bespoke jewellery that is completely unique.
However, this has turned out to be quite dangerous for me in the past (or at least for my husband’s wallet!)… It was when I was looking at some loose diamonds for a customer that I fell in love with an amazing, 2ct, D-colour, princess cut diamond. I soon realised I couldn’t let it slip through my fingers, so by the time I’d persuaded my husband that after 7 years of marriage I deserved it, I’d already started to think about how it could look!
Working in a jewellers who has a huge collection of engagement rings and their own workshop, I was spoilt for choice, but I knew ultimately that I wanted a totally bespoke ring. After speaking to our goldsmiths, I chose a platinum bar-setting, as I liked its simplicity and the fact that it would protect the diamond. I also decided on a soft, curved V-setting on the side, as I felt it showed off the diamond at its best and gave the ring a much softer finish. For the profile of the band, I copied the shape of my wedding ring (which had previously been re-made by our goldsmiths using an old ring I had owned), this meant the two rings would compliment each other perfectly.
Even after seeing the CAD (Computer Aided Design) images first, when I received the finished ring from our workshop it was even better than I could ever have imagined! As soon as I started wearing it I had numerous compliments and after being asked to reproduce the ring several times, we soon realised just how much people were drawn to the simplicity and uniqueness of the design. It was then that our MD, Jonathan Stoner asked my permission to include the design as part of our core collection. The ‘Dee’ ring is now produced in various carat weights and is shown in all Phillip Stoner stores.
I loved that I chose the diamond and helped to design the setting myself, it made the experience and the ring so personal to me. Even now, each time a Dee ring is made, it is handmade in our workshop and every setting is shaped specifically to cradle its own diamond, making every ring as unique as mine.”
